Pu'er

Wild Monk 2022

from $10.00

What a blessed opportunity to secure some raw purple leaf for a 2022 pressing of our ongoing best seller, Wild Monk! This beloved 100-gram cake is made from purple leaf and it reigns in a category all its own. Similar in flavor profile to oolong, it plays in the lighter realms, pleasant, sweet, tang on the tongue with sour notes akin to that of a grape peel. High in anthocyanins, it embodies the same beneficial compounds found in blueberries, eggplant, purple grapes and other blue, purple or dark red foods. It's a winner for it's multi-faceted expressions and consistent cha chi.

This particular pu'er is very special in that it was picked from tea trees grown entirely in the wild, surrounded by all the native floral and fauna, exposed to nothing but clean air, high altitude, healthy rain and sunshine. Grown in Yong De in the Yunnan province in China, this special tea is packed with goodness. The tea grows quite dark, almost purple as it has adapted to the high levels in sunshine in order to protect itself from the UV rays. For us humans that means that we get a tea that is higher in antioxidants than other teas.

See the blog post with more info on purple leaf tea and be sure to check out this leaf as a mao cha, as well!

Steamed and pressed for us on 6/7/2022. Young purple leaf tea can play toward the bitter/astringent side if hot water and long steeps are used. If you are uncertain whether purple leaf tea is for you, please try a one ounce sample rather than purchasing an entire cake.

Additional Info

While we here at the shop brew this tea with 212 F water, many of our customers are brewing this at temps of 195 F and slowly increasing water temps as infusions get longer.  It is delicious when brewed in the tea glass/tea thermos style of brewing, as well, but should definitely be brewed gongfu style at least once!

The dry leaf has a sweet and slight smoky aroma.  Even those who normally find smokier elements unattractive are fans of this tea.  You will find yourself reaching for this again and again for the energy of this tea is beyond compare.  Many customers and reviewers are calling this the "feel-good tea", suggesting that it has anti-depressant elements and leaves them feeling uplifted, energized and content.  We concur.

We are excited to offer such rare and delightful tea to our customers here in the US and around the world.  Our gratitude for each of you knows no bounds.

Basic Brewing Instructions:

  • Raw Pu'er tea may be given a 5-10 second rinse (Ripe Pu'er may be given two 5-10 second rinses) with the same temperature water as used for brewing.

  • 195˚-212˚ F water temperature.

  • Use 1-3 teaspoons per 8 Oz. of filtered water.

  • Recommended first steeping of 30 seconds - 1 minute.  Add 30 seconds for each subsequent infusion.

Tea brewing is meant to be a joyful exploration. There are no hard and fast rules. Experiment with the quantity of tea that you use, and steeping times. Enjoy discovering what your preferences are. They may change day to day.
